The 31-year-old midfielder didn’t keep his feelings under wraps, either. He retweeted a supporter’s scathing criticism of the club that ended with the less-than-subtle phrase “what a s*** club” after Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Osasuna—a match where Ciss actually scored Rayo’s only goal.

The social media drama quickly escalated to the point where Rayo felt compelled to release an official statement on Sunday explaining their decision. According to the club, they considered it inappropriate to celebrate anything during a matchday observed as a period of mourning, with players wearing black armbands and holding a minute’s silence for victims of two recent tragic railway accidents in Adamuz and Gelida.
Rayo confirmed they’ll properly honor their AFCON champion before their next home fixture against Real Oviedo on February 7th.
