Getafe in desperate need as they face resurgent Girona at Montilivi

Bordalás' men travel to Girona seeking vital points to escape the relegation zone, while the hosts aim for a fourth consecutive victory in 2026.

Getafe find themselves in a right pickle as they head to Montilivi, with Bordalás’ lads now firmly in the drop zone and gasping for points against a Girona side who’ve found their shooting boots since the turn of the year.

Girona’s resurgence

The Catalans are on a proper roll, having bagged three consecutive league wins since 2026 kicked off. Those nine points have seen them climb several positions in the table, and they’ll be looking to make it four on the bounce against a direct rival. Victory would open up a six-point gap between the sides – not to be sniffed at in this tight league.

Míchel’s squad has been boosted by some tasty additions:

  • Marc-André Ter Stegen between the sticks (though Gazzaniga’s kept two clean sheets during this winning run)
  • Fran Beltrán strengthening the midfield
  • The exciting Claudio Echeverri adding firepower up top

These reinforcements have given Girona new life, though they’re keeping their feet on the ground after struggling to climb out of the hole created by their shocking start to the season.

The home side will be without several players for this clash:

  • Van de Beek and Ounahi (injured)
  • Arnau (suspended after accumulating yellows)
  • Lass (serving the second of his two-match ban)

Stuani, Abel Ruiz and Witsel are all touch and go, while Livakovic won’t make the squad as he awaits the end of his loan spell. Asprilla has already signed for Galatasaray, so he’s off to Turkey.

Getafe’s struggles

Bordalás’ boys desperately need a result at Montilivi to turn their season around. They’ve strengthened with four January signings, although Boselli isn’t registered yet. Both Zaid Romero and Luis Vázquez could make their debuts as the visitors look to climb out of the relegation mire.

Getafe will take some confidence from their recent record against Girona – they won at Montilivi last season and secured a 2-1 victory at the Coliseum in the first half of this campaign.

Key battle: Vanat vs Liso

Girona’s Vanat is in the form of his life, having scored in all three matches of 2026 with four goals in total, propelling him into La Liga’s top 10 scorers. He’ll be looking to add to his tally after netting the winner against Osasuna in Girona’s last home game.

Getafe will be hoping Liso, with three goals to his name, can deliver the goods at the other end to help drag them out of the brown stuff.
