Lamine Yamal steals the show as Barcelona cruise past Oviedo
Barcelona's teenage sensation delivers a wonder goal with his brother watching on, while Dani Olmo continues his rich vein of form in comfortable Copa del Rey win
Barcelona’s wonderkid put on a proper show for his little brother with a stunning overhead kick as Flick’s men eased into the next round of the Copa del Rey.
Family affair at Montjuïc
Lamine Yamal might be terrorising La Liga defences every week, but he’s still just a teenager who adores his little brother. The young star brought Keyne to the stadium pre-match, posing for photos and sharing jokes before kick-off. Little did the youngster know he was about to witness an absolute worldie from his big bro.
In the 73rd minute, Dani Olmo delivered a delightful outside-of-the-boot pass that Lamine met with a spectacular semi-bicycle kick, sending the ball crashing into the net. Proper tekkers, that.
But Yamal’s contribution wasn’t just about the fancy finish. Earlier, when Barcelona were struggling to break down a stubborn Oviedo side, he outjumped Carmo to win possession before setting up Olmo for the crucial opener.
Olmo finding his rhythm
Speaking of Olmo, the Spain international is absolutely flying right now. His goal against Oviedo makes it six in his last nine appearances - not too shabby for a midfielder. He’s had a blinder of a week:
- Scored the crucial third against Slavia Prague midweek
- Broke the deadlock against Oviedo
- Provided the assist for Lamine’s wonder goal
The partnership between these two is becoming one of Barcelona’s most potent weapons, and it’s coming good at just the right time as the business end of the season approaches.
Flick’s flexible friends
One thing that’s crystal clear about Hansi Flick’s Barcelona is the tactical flexibility he’s instilled. His players are proper utility men:
- Gerard Martín played at centre-back despite being a natural full-back
- João Cancelo started at left-back instead of his usual right-back berth
- Eric García began at right-back before shifting to centre-back
This versatility is giving Barcelona serious options as they compete on multiple fronts.
Clean sheet restored
After shipping four goals across their previous two matches, Barcelona’s defence got back to basics with a clean sheet. If they’re going to be lifting any silverware come May, shutting up shop at the back will be just as important as the magic happening up front.
Flick will be particularly pleased that his side recovered from a poor first half where Oviedo actually created the better chances. Barcelona managed just one shot on target before the break, but stepped it up when it mattered in the second period.
With Lamine Yamal finding form at the perfect time, Barcelona’s season is shaping up nicely. His little brother might want to keep coming to games if this is what he inspires!
