Matarazzo heaps praise on 'special leader' Oyarzabal after Real Sociedad's victory

Real Sociedad boss Pellegrino Matarazzo singles out captain Mikel Oyarzabal for special praise while celebrating team effort in their third consecutive win.

American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo couldn’t hide his admiration for captain Mikel Oyarzabal after La Real secured a hard-fought victory against Celta Vigo, completing a perfect week with three consecutive wins.

Captain Fantastic

Matarazzo was still buzzing when he entered the press room, clearly chuffed with what his side had just produced. The gaffer was particularly effusive about his skipper Oyarzabal, though he made sure to spread the love around the dressing room as well.

“He is a special player,” Matarazzo admitted about his captain, revealing that while he knew of Oyarzabal’s quality before arriving in San Sebastián, he hadn’t fully grasped the Basque forward’s importance as a dressing room leader.

The American coach seems absolutely made up with his captain’s influence both on and off the pitch, describing how Oyarzabal “knows football and how to connect with everyone” - qualities that have clearly impressed the new boss since his arrival.

Resilient Performance

The victory wasn’t straightforward by any stretch. La Real had to defend deep at times against a possession-oriented Celta side, and matters got even more complicated when they were reduced to ten men in the second half.

However, Matarazzo praised his team’s resilience and counter-attacking prowess, specifically highlighting the contributions of:

  • Gonçalo Guedes
  • Álvaro Odriozola
  • Mikel Oyarzabal

The trio were particularly effective on the break, combining speed with what the coach described as “courage” to secure all three points despite the numerical disadvantage.

Odriozola’s Renaissance

Matarazzo also took time to praise Álvaro Odriozola, whose renaissance at Real Sociedad continues to impress after a difficult spell at Real Madrid.

“We’re delighted with ‘Odri’,” the coach explained, noting how the right-sided player has taken his chances when given opportunities. Matarazzo highlighted Odriozola’s pace and depth, particularly valuable in their five-man defensive system, and pointed to him as an example of players who are developing well under the new regime.

Mental Strength

When asked about the team’s improved mental state since his arrival, Matarazzo explained his philosophy: “Everything is connected. You need clarity in how you want to play football and, if that’s clear, you have more energy.”

The American coach seems to have brought a clear tactical approach alongside mental resilience, with the team now showing they can respond quickly after conceding - a proper Bobby Dazzler of an improvement compared to earlier in the season.

With three wins on the spin, Matarazzo’s Real Sociedad revolution is gathering some serious momentum in La Liga.
