Athletic Club ticket prices plummet 40 euros in an hour for crucial Sporting showdown

San Mamés could see record attendance for Wednesday's Champions League decider despite UEFA sanctions preventing away fans from attending the crucial match.

Athletic Bilbao fans looking to witness their club’s decisive Champions League clash with Sporting CP this Wednesday might want to check ticket prices again – they’ve taken a proper tumble in the last few hours.

Ticket price rollercoaster

In a surprising twist that’s left early birds feeling like right mugs, Athletic Club slashed ticket prices by a whopping 40 euros in less than an hour on Monday. Supporters who purchased their seats around 9 AM found themselves paying up to 150 euros, while those who waited until 10 AM snagged the exact same spots for just 110 euros.

The club employs a “dynamic pricing” strategy that adjusts costs based on demand and expectation – a bit like how flight tickets work. This means:

  • Tickets in the south stand (normally reserved for away fans) were initially priced between 130-150 euros
  • The same tickets dropped to 90-110 euros just an hour later
  • Other sections saw similar reductions, with some tribune seats falling to 80 euros

No away support due to UEFA sanctions

The Portuguese visitors won’t be bringing any supporters to the Basque Country, as Sporting are serving a UEFA ban after their fans used pyrotechnics during a previous Champions League fixture. This punishment has freed up the entire away section, with those tickets now available to home supporters.

Record attendance on the cards

San Mamés is anticipating a potential attendance record for this crucial European night, though the steep prices – even after reductions – remain beyond many supporters’ budgets.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Athletic’s dynamic pricing has worked in fans’ favor. After their victory against Atalanta, ticket prices for future matches dropped by 10 euros the very next day.

With the pricing system responding to demand, there’s even a possibility that if sales don’t meet expectations, we could see further reductions before Wednesday’s massive encounter that will determine the Lions’ Champions League fate.
