Barça's brightest prospect Dro jumps ship to PSG in shock January move

The 18-year-old Spanish wonderkid has signed with the Parisian giants until 2030, leaving Barcelona stunned after rejecting a contract extension.

Barcelona’s promising midfield talent Dro has completed a surprise January transfer to PSG, with the French club securing his signature until 2030 in a deal worth approximately €8.5 million.

Flick left fuming

The departure has reportedly left Barcelona manager Hansi Flick absolutely gutted, with the German coach having taken a particular shine to the youngster. Flick had fast-tracked Dro into the first-team setup after being impressed during last summer’s pre-season tour of Asia.

The 18-year-old Galician midfielder, who only celebrated his birthday on January 12th, informed Barcelona of his intention to trigger his €6 million release clause on January 16th. However, the clubs eventually negotiated a slightly improved fee, with Barça pocketing around €8.5 million for their academy product.

Meteoric rise cut short

Dro’s trajectory at Barcelona had been nothing short of spectacular:

  • Joined Barça at 14 from Val Miñor to play for the Cadete B team
  • Caught Flick’s eye last season and was promoted to first-team training
  • Made his La Liga debut as a starter against Real Sociedad
  • Debuted in the Champions League against Olympiacos
  • Last appeared for Barcelona against Atlético Madrid, playing 16 minutes

The youngster had been absent from recent squads, initially explained away as minor fitness issues, but now clearly part of his exit strategy.

Contract rejection stings

What’s particularly painful for the Blaugrana is that they were actively working to secure Dro’s long-term future. Barcelona had planned to extend his contract (which ran until 2027) through to 2031, following the same path they’d taken with other La Masia jewels like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí.

Instead, the midfielder has opted for the bright lights of Paris, with Luis Enrique’s side securing another potential star for their project.

Upon signing, Dro expressed his delight: “I’m very happy and proud to join Paris Saint-Germain.”

For Barcelona, it’s another kick in the teeth during a period where their financial troubles continue to hamper their ability to compete with Europe’s elite in the transfer market. Losing one of their brightest prospects will raise serious questions about the club’s ability to retain top talent.
