Burgos' new boys Luengo and Galdames arrive with promotion talk on their lips

Burgos CF's winter signings Oier Luengo and Pablo Galdames make bold statements during their unveiling at El Plantío, setting their sights on promotion to La Liga.

Fresh faces at Burgos CF aren’t shy about their ambitions, with new winter signings Oier Luengo and Pablo Galdames both talking up promotion prospects during their unveiling at El Plantío.

Promotion push on the cards?

With Burgos sitting just a single point outside the playoff spots after two matchdays in the second half of the season, there’s a genuine buzz around Luis Miguel Ramis’ side. The club’s winter recruitment certainly reflects those lofty ambitions.

Defender Oier Luengo, who knows a thing or two about getting promoted after going up with Oviedo last season, didn’t mince his words during Monday’s presentation:

“We have enough quality to achieve promotion,” the Basque centre-back declared, balancing ambition with pragmatism in his assessment of what lies ahead.

Luengo’s recent spell hasn’t been all roses and rainbows, though. After barely getting a sniff in Spain’s top flight, he’s keen for regular minutes again:

“It’s been complicated. After feeling important at Oviedo for several years, it’s difficult when you don’t get playing time,” he admitted, while emphasizing he’s not arrived as a direct replacement for the departing Aitor Córdoba.

Chilean ambition

Meanwhile, Chilean midfielder Pablo Galdames was singing from the same hymn sheet, making it crystal clear that promotion is the target. The former Argentine league player described the Burgos project as “ambitious and demanding” – music to supporters’ ears.

Galdames revealed the move happened quickly, partly thanks to inside knowledge from his mate Lucas Robertone:

“I know Robertone and have followed him since he arrived at Almería. When the opportunity came up, I had no doubts,” he explained, despite having options to continue his career in Argentina.

What they bring to the table

While Luengo brings promotion experience and defensive solidity, Galdames describes himself as “more of a constructor than a destroyer” in midfield. The Chilean prefers operating:

  • With a ball-winner alongside him
  • Facing forward toward the opposition goal
  • Looking to dictate play in possession

With these two new additions showing proper bottle from day one, Burgos fans will be hoping their promotion talk isn’t just a load of old cobblers. The team’s currently knocking on the door of the playoff spots, and with this kind of ambition, they might just have a right go at reaching La Liga.
