Florentino's Achilles Nightmare: Valdano Reveals Madrid President's Pre-Presidency Injury

Jorge Valdano shares how Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez once suffered the same devastating Achilles tendon injury that has now sidelined Villarreal's Juan Foyth.

Following Juan Foyth’s devastating Achilles tendon rupture during Villarreal’s match against Real Madrid, Argentine football legend Jorge Valdano revealed a surprising connection to the Madrid president’s past.

Presidential Pain

Speaking on Deporte+ with Juanma Castaño, Valdano dropped a proper bombshell about Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez that few fans knew about.

“Florentino Pérez ruptured his Achilles tendon celebrating a goal at home before becoming Real Madrid president,” Valdano explained, highlighting how these injuries can strike anyone, anywhere, regardless of status or setting.

Bit mental to think of the suited-and-booted Madrid supremo hopping around his living room and ending up in a right two-and-eight, innit? Just goes to show football passion can be costly for anyone - from club presidents down to Sunday league plodders.

The Foyth Situation

Villarreal confirmed the worst fears on Sunday after medical tests revealed Foyth’s complete Achilles rupture from Saturday’s match against Los Blancos. The club announced the Argentine defender will undergo surgery in the coming days.

The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Villarreal captain:

  • He collapsed without contact just 21 minutes into the match
  • Will miss the remainder of the current season
  • Almost certainly ruled out of the next World Cup with Argentina

The club’s statement offered support: “We are with you, captain. Stay strong, Juan!”

Career Setback

This isn’t Foyth’s first injury rodeo with the Yellow Submarine. The defender has previously battled through serious knee and right shoulder injuries, always managing to bounce back impressively.

However, an Achilles rupture represents a different level of challenge altogether. As they explained on the programme, it’s among the most devastating injuries in football.

“The body’s weight shifts forward and the tendon bears all that weight,” was how they described the mechanism of injury - simple physics with brutal consequences.

As Valdano poignantly noted, the Achilles tendon doesn’t discriminate - whether you’re celebrating in your front room or competing at the highest level, when it goes, it goes.
