Girona snatch late point to keep 2026 unbeaten run alive
Michel's side salvage a draw against stubborn Getafe with Ter Stegen making an immediate impact on debut, keeping Girona four points clear of the drop zone.
A last-gasp equaliser felt like victory for Girona as they maintained their unbeaten start to 2026, though their three-match winning streak came to an end against Getafe’s stubborn resistance.
Hard-fought point
The Catalans knew they’d have their work cut out against José Bordalás’ characteristically tough Getafe side. Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances – including a Lemar effort that crashed against the crossbar – Girona found themselves behind and staring defeat in the face.
But Michel’s men showed their resilience, grabbing a late equaliser to secure a precious point that keeps them four points clear of the direct relegation spots. Not a bad result considering many of their relegation rivals picked up points this week.
Ter Stegen straight in
Despite three consecutive league victories and back-to-back clean sheets, Michel didn’t hesitate to make a change between the sticks, throwing Barcelona loanee Marc-André Ter Stegen straight into the starting eleven mere days after his arrival.
The German’s inclusion came at the expense of Gazzaniga, who had been Girona’s undisputed number one since October 2022, missing just three matches in that span. But Ter Stegen’s ball-playing abilities fit Michel’s philosophy like a hand in glove, with the keeper delivering a masterclass in distribution throughout the match.
He proved his worth in the 95th minute too, using his body to deny Boselli what would’ve been a heartbreaking winner for the visitors.
Injury woes continue
Girona’s squad remains stretched thin with several key absences:
- Witsel, Abel Ruiz and Stuani all missed out through injury (though all are nearing returns)
- Portu, Van de Beek and Ounahi remain sidelined
- Arnau and Lass were unavailable through suspension
This left Michel with just four first-team outfield players on the bench. New signing Fran Beltrán was another debutant alongside Ter Stegen, slotting into midfield alongside Iván Martín and completing the full 90 minutes.
Young Argentine talent Echeverri also got some minutes after Getafe’s opener, showing flashes of his electric potential in a cameo appearance.
