Las Palmas hit the skids as defensive woes mount

The Canary Islanders have shipped six goals in two defeats, with manager Luis García calling for a return to control and balance in their play.

Las Palmas are experiencing their first serious wobble of the season with defensive frailties suddenly threatening to derail their campaign.

Form takes a nosedive

The yellow submarine has sprung a leak, and it’s becoming a proper concern. Las Palmas have now gone three matches without a win, including back-to-back defeats that have set alarm bells ringing around the Estadio Gran Canaria.

Their most recent setback, a 1-2 home defeat to Córdoba, followed a comprehensive 4-1 hammering away at Racing Santander. What’s particularly troubling for the fans is not just the results themselves, but the manner of the performances.

Defensive collapse

Before this dismal run, Las Palmas had been the dog’s dinner defensively:

  • Just 13 goals conceded in their first 20 matches
  • A reputation for balance and control
  • One of the most organized sides in Segunda División

That defensive solidity has evaporated faster than a pint in the Canary Islands sun, with six goals shipped in just two matches. The team that once looked so well-drilled now appears disjointed and vulnerable.

García seeks solutions

Manager Luis García has identified the core issue - a loss of control. The gaffer believes his side is getting caught up in chaotic, end-to-end football rather than maintaining their structured approach.

“We need to recover our calm and composure,” García explained post-match, emphasizing the need for the team to rediscover when to accelerate play, when to keep possession, and when to press.

Players acknowledge collective responsibility

Goalkeeper Horkas didn’t mince his words after the Córdoba defeat, pointing to a collective defensive breakdown rather than individual errors. The team’s defensive issues appear to stem from a disconnection between units and a failure to defend as a cohesive group.

With the promotion race heating up, Las Palmas will need to rediscover their defensive mojo sharpish if they’re to avoid watching their season go to Barney Rubble.
