Maupay set for Sevilla switch as striker jets in for medical

Former Premier League forward Neal Maupay is heading to Andalusia on loan from Marseille, with Sevilla securing a purchase option for the 29-year-old Frenchman.

Sevilla are set to complete their first winter signing as Neal Maupay prepares to touch down in southern Spain.

Deal Details

The 29-year-old French striker will arrive in Seville on Tuesday to undergo his medical and finalise his move from Olympique Marseille. According to reports, Sevilla have secured a loan deal with a purchase option of approximately €6 million.

The negotiations between the clubs have been ongoing for several days, with Marseille initially pushing for a permanent transfer before eventually accepting the loan arrangement. Respected journalists Santi Aouna of Footmercato and Matteo Moretto have both confirmed the details of the agreement.

Wage Bill Manoeuvring

Sevilla needed to create some breathing space in their wage structure before completing the Maupay deal. The Andalusian club appear to have achieved this through:

  • Alfon’s potential loan move to Villarreal
  • The possible long-term absence of defender Marcao freeing up salary capacity

These financial adjustments have enabled Sevilla to finally get the deal over the line in the last few hours.

European Journeyman

Maupay brings considerable European experience to Nervión, having previously turned out for a proper who’s who of clubs across the continent:

  • Nice, Saint-Étienne and Brest in France
  • Brentford, Brighton and Everton in England

The striker has struggled for minutes at Marseille this season and will be hoping to reignite his career under Matías Almeyda at Sevilla.

For a player who’s had a right old barney with more than a few Premier League defenders during his time in Blighty, La Liga might offer a fresh start for the combative forward. Sevilla fans will hope he can bring some much-needed firepower to their frontline.
