Sevilla weighing up Alfon loan move to Villarreal as transfer deadline looms
The Andalusian club considers sending summer signing Alfon to the Yellow Submarine with potential €7m buy option as they look to free up wage space for reinforcements.
Sevilla are exploring the possibility of sending winger Alfon to Villarreal on loan as they scramble to create salary headroom before the January transfer window slams shut.
Loan with an option
The 26-year-old from Albacete only arrived at the Nervión outfit last summer on a free transfer after his contract with Celta Vigo expired. Now, just half a season later, he could be on his way to the Yellow Submarine in a move that reportedly suits all parties involved.
According to El Chiringuito, the potential loan deal would include an option to buy at the end of the season, set at approximately €7 million. Not exactly peanuts for a player who’s had limited impact since his arrival.
System change driving the decision
Sevilla’s tactical shift under Matías Almeyda appears to be a key factor behind the potential move. The gaffer’s recent decision to deploy wing-backs rather than traditional wingers has reduced the need for players in Alfon’s position.
With other wide options like Ejuke, Januzaj, and the currently injured Vargas already on the books, offloading Alfon makes sense from both tactical and financial perspectives.
The Albacete-born winger has made 13 appearances across La Liga and Copa del Rey this season, scoring twice, but has already missed eight matches through injury – another factor that might be pushing Sevilla towards accepting Villarreal’s proposal.
Desperate for a striker
Sporting Director Antonio Cordón is working against the clock to free up wage space that would allow Sevilla to strengthen other positions. The club is particularly keen on bringing in a new striker, with advanced talks reportedly ongoing with Marseille for French forward Maupay.
Meanwhile, Villarreal have their own reasons for pursuing the deal. Following the departures of Ilias Akhomach and Solomon, plus the serious injury to Juan Foyth, Marcelino’s side need reinforcements to maintain their current Champions League position.
With just a week left in the transfer window, expect plenty of movement as both clubs look to sort their squads for the business end of the season. Bit of a mad dash to the finish line, this one.
