Álvaro Carreras: 'I thrive on the daily pressure at Real Madrid'

The young Galician full-back opens up about life at the Bernabéu ahead of Champions League return to Benfica, embracing the pressure and working under Arbeloa.

Real Madrid’s summer acquisition Álvaro Carreras faces an emotional return to Benfica in the Champions League, revealing he’s relishing the intense spotlight at the Spanish giants despite the daily scrutiny that comes with wearing the famous white shirt.

Pressure? Bring it on

The young Galician defender, who swapped Benfica for the Bernabéu, has been surprisingly candid about the mental demands of playing for arguably the biggest club in world football. Rather than wilting under the expectation, Carreras is positively thriving.

“The pressure is daily, but I like it,” Carreras admitted ahead of Madrid’s crucial Champions League clash at the Estádio da Luz. It’s refreshing honesty from a player still finding his feet at the top level.

For many youngsters, the weight of the Madrid shirt can be proper Danny Dyer (dire), but Carreras seems to have the perfect mentality to cope with the fishbowl existence that comes with representing Los Blancos.

Learning from legends

Carreras was quick to praise his current boss, Álvaro Arbeloa, who has clearly made a significant impact on the defender’s development:

  • “He wants us to enjoy ourselves and be ourselves”
  • “Stay together, be comfortable with the ball”
  • “Playing with these teammates makes everything easier”

The youngster also revealed he wouldn’t mind working with José Mourinho someday, describing the Portuguese as “a legend” while diplomatically adding he’s very happy with Arbeloa at present.

Benfica reunion

Tomorrow’s match represents a swift reunion with his former teammates, many of whom he still maintains close relationships with. Carreras specifically mentioned young talent Prestianni, expressing delight at his former colleague’s playing time.

“I still have a close relationship with them,” Carreras explained. “I wish them the best. They should keep fighting – it’s a very demanding club and things will work out well for them.”

Taking it match by match

Despite Madrid’s current good form, Carreras displayed impressive maturity when discussing the team’s winning streak, noting: “Football is game by game. We might be in a great moment, but if something bad happened tomorrow, it would be seen as Madrid’s worst period.”

That’s the reality of life at the Bernabéu – you’re only as good as your last 90 minutes, and tomorrow’s Champions League clash in Lisbon will be another significant test for both Carreras and his teammates.
