Amrabat goes under the knife for troublesome ankle injury

Betis midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has undergone surgery in Amsterdam to clean up his right ankle, with recovery set to begin away from Sevilla.

Real Betis midfielder Sofyan Amrabat has undergone surgery on his right ankle in Amsterdam, with the Moroccan international now facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

Surgery details

The Andalusian club confirmed today that Amrabat had an arthroscopic cleaning procedure on his troublesome right ankle. The operation was performed by Dr. Gino Kerkhoffs in Amsterdam, with members of Betis’ medical staff present throughout.

According to the club, Amrabat will begin his post-surgical recovery in the Dutch capital before returning to Sevilla to complete his rehabilitation process.

Delayed procedure

This surgery has been on the cards for some time, with the procedure initially postponed during the Africa Cup of Nations. It was then rescheduled for last Friday but faced another delay before finally taking place today.

The timing is particularly significant as it marks exactly two months since that unfortunate incident during Betis’ UEFA Europa League match against Utrecht – the same collision that left Isco seriously injured. Talk about bad luck coming in pairs!

Impact on availability

The ankle problem has been causing Amrabat grief for weeks. Despite speculation he might return for the Seville derby at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, he instead joined up with Morocco for AFCON where he managed to feature in:

  • Morocco’s first two group matches
  • Part of their quarter-final tie

However, the injury ultimately prevented him from continuing in the tournament, although he remained with the squad until their elimination.

Double blow for Betis

The situation leaves Betis without two of their most influential midfielders for the foreseeable future. Neither player has a confirmed return date, leaving Manuel Pellegrini’s squad looking a bit Adam and Eve in the middle of the park.

With European and domestic campaigns still ongoing, the Verde y Blanco faithful will be hoping for positive news on both players’ recovery timelines in the coming weeks.
