Arbeloa hails Mourinho as 'one of us forever' ahead of mentor clash in Lisbon
Real Madrid youth boss Álvaro Arbeloa faces mentor José Mourinho in Champions League Youth League showdown, expressing deep admiration for his former manager.
Former Real Madrid defender turned youth team coach Álvaro Arbeloa faces an emotional reunion with his mentor José Mourinho as their respective sides meet in Lisbon this Wednesday night.
Teacher vs Student in Lisbon
Arbeloa’s Real Madrid youth squad will take on Mourinho’s Benfica in a crucial Youth League clash at the Estádio da Luz, with the Spaniard making no secret of his admiration for the Portuguese tactician who guided Madrid during a turbulent but trophy-laden period.
“It’s a tremendous pride to hear his words,” Arbeloa told reporters, clearly moved by Mourinho’s recent praise. “He’s been much more than just a coach to me. He’s been extremely important and now I consider him a great friend.”
The former right-back, who was one of Mourinho’s most trusted lieutenants during the Special One’s time at the Bernabéu, revealed they’ve maintained their relationship over the years despite not speaking regularly.
“He’s one of those friends you can go without speaking to for ages, but if I called him at 3 in the morning, he’d answer,” Arbeloa explained, showing the depth of their bond.
‘Uno di noi’
In perhaps the most telling comment of the press conference, Arbeloa declared that “José always was, is and will be ‘uno di noi’” – Italian for “one of us” – a phrase often used by Inter Milan fans to describe their beloved former manager.
Despite his clear admiration, Arbeloa was quick to point out he’s not trying to be a Mourinho clone:
“I said from day one, it would be impossible to imitate him because that would mean failure. My success will come from being myself, though there’s certainly a part of José’s influence in my approach.”
Looking to the Future
While the reunion with Mourinho dominates headlines, Arbeloa also spoke glowingly about his current crop of players, particularly singling out Jude Bellingham’s leadership qualities and Arda Güler’s technical ability.
On Bellingham, he was effusive: “Beyond his quality, he wants to be a leader and an example. I’m very proud to have a player like him. He’s going to be a cornerstone of this Real Madrid for a long time.”
The match represents more than just a teacher-student reunion – it’s a crucial fixture in the Youth League with Real Madrid aiming for a top-8 finish. For Arbeloa, it’s clear this is a game that transcends the normal importance of youth football.
“If we win, it’s a match I’ll always remember,” he admitted, while acknowledging the Estádio da Luz holds special memories for Madridistas after their Champions League triumphs there.
