Betis nightmare continues as Isco and Amrabat hit two-month absence mark

Pellegrini's side struggling to cope without their midfield maestros as injury crisis deepens, with no return date in sight for key duo.

Real Betis’ season hangs in the balance as they navigate a crucial period without their two most influential midfielders.

Injury Crisis Deepens

It’s been a proper mare for Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis, who are now marking two full months without Isco Alarcón and Sofyan Amrabat. The pair have been sidelined since that unfortunate collision during their Europa League clash with Utrecht at La Cartuja, when Amrabat accidentally caught his captain with a nasty challenge while attempting to shoot.

The incident couldn’t have come at a worse time for Los Verdiblancos, who are currently dealing with an absolute shocker of an injury crisis. Today’s training session saw a staggering eleven players missing through various physical problems. Talk about having your bread buttered on the wrong side!

Isco’s Ongoing Battle

Initially, it seemed Isco had copped the worst of it. The Málaga-born playmaker suffered:

  • A shin laceration requiring seven stitches
  • Persistent ankle problems that refused to settle

After initially trying a treatment with growth factors, the medical team opted for surgery, with Isco undergoing arthroscopic procedure in late December. The club captain has been a regular at the training ground for rehab sessions, but there’s still no timeline for his return.

This latest setback adds to Isco’s unfortunate injury history, having previously suffered two fibula fractures during his career. The 31-year-old maestro was in sparkling form before this latest blow, making his absence all the more painful for Betis.

Amrabat’s African Cup Gamble

Amrabat’s situation has followed an equally frustrating path. Despite initial optimism about a quicker recovery, the Moroccan midfielder pushed himself with double training sessions trying to be fit for November’s Seville derby and December’s Barcelona clash, but couldn’t make either.

When it became clear he wouldn’t feature again before the Africa Cup of Nations, Betis released him early to continue recovery with the Moroccan national team. He managed to play in Morocco’s first two AFCON matches before his ankle problems worsened, forcing him to sit out the remainder of the tournament.

Following consultation between medical teams from Betis, Morocco and his parent club Fenerbahçe, Amrabat is now scheduled for arthroscopic surgery in the Netherlands. However, the operation has been postponed, leaving him still waiting for his turn under the knife.

The Road Ahead

No one at Betis is willing to put a date on either player’s return, though they desperately hope both can contribute to their remaining objectives this season. Until then, Pellegrini must somehow keep his depleted squad competitive across multiple fronts.

For the Betis faithful, it’s a case of fingers crossed and hoping their team can keep their heads above water until the cavalry returns. Two months down, and who knows how many more to go?
