Cadiz eyeing Gattoni again but wage demands prove stumbling block

Sevilla's Federico Gattoni has been offered to Cadiz, but financial constraints make the deal unlikely despite the Argentine defender seeking regular playing time.

Cadiz are once again considering a move for Federico Gattoni, but the Segunda Division side’s financial reality is at odds with Sevilla’s demands for the Argentine defender.

A familiar transfer target

This isn’t the first time Gattoni’s name has appeared on Cadiz’s radar. The centre-back has been a long-standing target for the club in previous transfer windows, and now Sevilla have formally offered the player to Cadiz during this January transfer period.

Gattoni is looking to restart his career after underwhelming loan spells at both Anderlecht and River Plate. Sevilla view Cadiz’s Nuevo Mirandilla as the ideal stage for the 24-year-old to regain his form and confidence. What seems a decent bit of business on paper, though, has crashed head-first into the yellow submarine’s financial reality.

Financial hurdles

The main obstacle to getting this deal over the line is Sevilla’s financial demands. The Andalusian club is insisting that Cadiz cover 100% of the player’s wages – a figure that’s simply not viable for a Segunda Division outfit. This same issue was the dealbreaker last season when Cadiz were still in La Liga.

With the club now operating in the second tier, their focus has shifted firmly to financial austerity and damage control. The bean counters at the “Little Silver Cup” (as Cadiz is affectionately known) have tightened the purse strings considerably.

Sporting considerations

Beyond the money troubles, there are doubts about whether Gattoni’s profile even matches Cadiz’s current transfer strategy. The club isn’t prepared to push the boat out for players who can’t guarantee immediate adaptation or who might upset the wage structure within the squad.

Unless Sevilla dramatically lower their demands, the Argentine defender will remain just another name on Cadiz’s wishlist rather than actually donning the yellow shirt.

Independiente interest

Cadiz isn’t Gattoni’s only potential escape route. Argentine side Independiente also have the central defender on their radar. Sevilla would prefer a permanent transfer rather than another loan deal, but they’re considering various options.

Gattoni was registered with La Liga just last week – a necessary step before he can be loaned or transferred – and was included in the squad for Saturday’s match against Athletic Bilbao. If he does leave on loan, it would be his third temporary move since arriving at Sevilla in summer 2023.
