Daniel Maldini: 'Proud of my surname, but I haven't shown my full quality yet'

The son of Paolo and grandson of Cesare joins Lazio on loan, viewing the move as a crucial step to finally showcase his potential after a difficult spell at Atalanta.

The Maldini footballing dynasty has a new chapter as Daniel, son of Paolo and grandson of Cesare, looks to carve his own path at Lazio after completing a loan move from Atalanta. The young Italian sees this as his chance to finally step out of the shadows of his illustrious family name.

Fresh start in Rome

Maldini arrives at the Stadio Olimpico after a frustrating period at Atalanta where he barely got a look-in, making just nine Serie A appearances plus solitary outings in the Champions League and Coppa Italia this season. The 23-year-old midfielder is keen to turn the page.

“It’s an important step. I’m coming from a complicated period,” Maldini told Lazio’s club media. “Now it’s time to return and show my quality and help the team.”

The loan deal reportedly includes a potential obligation to buy for around €14 million if certain objectives are met - a proper chance for the lad to prove his worth in the capital.

Living with the legacy

Carrying one of Italian football’s most iconic surnames brings both privileges and pressures. Born in Milan in 2001, Daniel came through the Rossoneri youth ranks just like his dad and grandad before him, making his Serie A debut for Milan aged 18.

He’s refreshingly candid about the weight of expectation:

“It’s an honour to carry my surname and to have made my way in football, although I haven’t shown my full quality and characteristics yet, so now is the time to do it.”

Despite the famous name, Daniel insists he makes his own decisions, though he acknowledges his father’s guidance: “My father advises me, we talk father to son. He helps with decisions, although I make them myself.”

What next for Maldini?

The attacking midfielder has already had his initial conversation with manager Maurizio Sarri, though he described it as “a general chat” with his position still to be determined in the coming days.

Interestingly, one of his footballing idols at Lazio was Alessandro Nesta - who later became his manager at Monza. Small world in Italian football, innit?

Maldini made his senior Italy debut last October in a Nations League victory over Israel, having previously represented the Azzurri at various youth levels. Now it’s time for the next step in a career that’s been more stop-start than his famous surname might suggest.

The youngster will be available for Lazio’s upcoming Serie A clash against Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico, where fans will be hoping he can show a bit of that Maldini magic that’s been missing in his career so far.
