Ferrari revs up for Gijón adventure: 'Jiménez call was key'

Uruguayan striker Andrés Ferrari reveals why he chose Sporting Gijón, citing manager Borja Jiménez's personal touch as the decisive factor in his loan move.

Uruguayan forward Andrés Ferrari has revealed that a personal phone call from manager Borja Jiménez was the deciding factor in his decision to join Sporting Gijón.

Manager’s personal touch sealed the deal

During his official presentation at the Asturian club, Ferrari emphasized how Jiménez’s direct approach and the confidence shown in him by the club hierarchy convinced him to make the switch to El Molinón.

“The call from Borja Jiménez was key to signing for Sporting,” Ferrari admitted, highlighting the importance of feeling wanted in his decision-making process.

The Uruguayan striker arrives on loan from Belgian side Sint-Truidense with an option to buy at the end of the season, giving him extra motivation to impress during his stint in Spain’s Segunda División.

Comparing himself to compatriot legends

When asked about his playing style, Ferrari named fellow Uruguayan strikers Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani as his personal reference points, though he sees more similarities with the latter:

  • More physically mobile like Cavani
  • Strong back-to-goal play
  • Good pace into space
  • Aerial prowess and heading ability

These attributes could prove valuable for a Sporting side pushing for promotion this season.

Whirlwind start in Asturias

Ferrari’s introduction to life at Sporting has been nothing short of chaotic. The striker described his first days in Gijón as “a bit of a dog’s dinner” (un lío), having been thrown into match action after just one training session with his new teammates.

Despite the rushed start, he praised the squad’s welcoming nature, describing them as “very united with good players” – a positive sign for his integration.

Focus on performance, not numbers

While avoiding setting specific goalscoring targets, Ferrari made it clear that his future at Sporting depends entirely on his performances. He’s committed to giving his all to help achieve the club’s objectives, which in turn could secure his permanent transfer come season’s end.

The striker was presented following Sporting’s first training session of the week as they prepare for Sunday’s away clash against Eibar at Ipurua (16:15 local time). The team will be without the injured Gaspar Campos for the fixture, in addition to long-term absentee Mamadou Loum.
