Flick keeps Barça focused on what they can control ahead of crucial Copenhagen clash
Barcelona boss Hansi Flick emphasizes team mentality as Champions League knockout race heats up, with potential boost from Ferran Torres return.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is keeping his squad laser-focused on their own performance against Copenhagen, refusing to get caught up in the permutations of other Champions League fixtures that could affect their top-8 qualification hopes.
Eyes on the prize
With Barcelona pushing to secure direct qualification to the knockout stages, Flick made it clear his team won’t be distracted by results elsewhere: “Solo estaremos pendientes de lo que esté en nuestras manos,” the German tactician explained, emphasizing they’ll only concern themselves with what’s in their control.
The former Bayern boss stressed respect for their Danish opponents while maintaining confidence in his squad’s abilities, even with some key players sidelined:
- No Pedri or De Jong available for selection
- Ferran Torres could make a surprise return to the squad after rapid recovery
- Rotation will be key with Flick noting they’ll “start with 11 and finish with 5 different players”
Youth development and squad harmony
Flick spoke warmly about La Masia product Fermín López, whose contract renewal appears to be progressing well. The manager’s appreciation for academy graduates was evident as he discussed the midfielder’s mentality and attitude.
When asked about Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s philosophy on not distinguishing between starters and substitutes, Flick expressed complete agreement:
“We’re always one team,” he affirmed, highlighting the importance of every squad member being ready to perform at the same level when called upon.
Champions League format gets thumbs up
Interestingly, Flick revealed his enthusiasm for the new Champions League format, saying “I love it” and appreciating the drama it creates. Barcelona now face a golden opportunity to secure their place among Europe’s elite eight.
The gaffer also took time to praise both Lamine Yamal and Roony Bardghji, with particular attention to Yamal’s pressing work that led to Barcelona’s first goal in their previous match - something Flick values even more than the youngster’s more spectacular contributions.
With Andreas Christensen working his way back from injury, Barcelona appear to be gathering momentum at a crucial stage of the campaign as they prepare to face Copenhagen at Montjuic.
