Huesca bracing for potential exits as Ángel Pérez and Kortajarena release clauses loom

Sporting director Martín González admits Huesca are powerless if release clauses are triggered, while new signing Álex Cantero brings attacking versatility to the relegation-threatened side.

SD Huesca find themselves in a proper pickle with the January transfer window drawing to a close, as sporting director Ángel Martín González admits the club could lose key players Ángel Pérez and Kortajarena if their release clauses are met.

Release clause concerns

While unveiling their third winter signing Álex Cantero, Martín González delivered some potentially troubling news for Huesca supporters about two of their standout performers:

“If someone pays the release clauses for Ángel Pérez and Kortajarena, our hands are tied,” the sporting director confessed, clearly bracing for potential departures. “Both are crucial to the manager’s system and we’d love for this not to happen, but it’s not up to us.”

The club aren’t sitting on their hands though, with contingency plans already in motion should the worst-case scenario materialize. They’re actively scouting potential replacements if either player departs before the window slams shut.

Busy final days ahead

It’s shaping up to be a right old barney of a transfer deadline, with Martín González revealing that “four or five players” are expected to leave the club, with several incomings also in the pipeline.

“Either we go all guns blazing or it’ll be difficult to maintain a 22-player squad at this point,” he explained, suggesting a significant squad overhaul is underway as they look to strengthen various positions.

Cantero eager to impress

New boy Cantero, who already made his debut against Andorra last weekend, is champing at the bit to establish himself in manager Bolo’s starting lineup.

The versatile attacker describes himself as “a fast, powerful player who can operate in various attacking positions” with good one-on-one skills and crossing ability. He’s been instructed by Bolo to be aggressive, make runs into space, and focus on creating goal-scoring opportunities.

Despite Huesca currently sitting in the relegation zone, Cantero isn’t hitting the panic button just yet: “Obviously the situation isn’t ideal, but I wouldn’t call it an emergency either. It’s down to us to compete in every match and pick up points. The dressing room isn’t down in the dumps at all.”

With significant squad changes on the horizon and the threat of losing key players, Huesca face a crucial final stretch of the winter window as they battle to preserve their Segunda División status.
