Lekue rallies Athletic ahead of 'last bullet' European showdown
Athletic Club captain Iñigo Lekue speaks candidly about their crucial Champions League clash with Sporting CP, while addressing league struggles and squad morale.
Athletic Club face a pivotal European night while struggling domestically, as captain Iñigo Lekue calls for unity ahead of their crucial Champions League showdown with Sporting CP.
‘Last bullet’ at San Mamés
Despite their concerning league form, Athletic’s European campaign has given fans something to smile about. Lekue didn’t mince his words about what’s at stake against Sporting CP.
“We’ve reached where we wanted, which is playing our last bullet at home with our people,” the captain explained, emphasizing the team’s determination to deliver a magical European night for the San Mamés faithful.
The significance isn’t lost on Lekue, who believes qualification would be “practically historic” for the Basque side. He’s urging teammates to draw inspiration from their second-half performance against Atalanta, which sparked belief in their European credentials.
League struggles cast shadow
While European dreams provide a welcome distraction, Athletic’s domestic situation is becoming a proper nightmare. The club sits just three points above the relegation zone – a position utterly unacceptable for a club of their stature.
“Being three points from relegation is not something we want,” Lekue admitted with characteristic bluntness. The captain revealed senior players are working to maintain positivity among younger squad members unaccustomed to such pressure.
He made it crystal clear that league survival remains the absolute priority: “The obligation of La Liga is above everything.”
Fan power and future focus
Despite their poor form, Athletic’s support remains unwavering. Lekue praised the supporters who’ve continued to pack San Mamés and made themselves heard away from home – particularly in Bergamo, where “they seemed like 20,000” pushing the team forward.
The captain also addressed his own contract situation, which expires this summer, but insisted now wasn’t the time for personal discussions.
Interestingly, Lekue recalled being in the stands with his father during Athletic’s famous 2012 Europa League semi-final against the very same Sporting – a memory that clearly still resonates as he prepares to face the Portuguese giants once again.
