Madrid's new 'Little Bird' taking flight at La Fábrica

17-year-old Diego Lacosta is drawing comparisons to Fede Valverde with his powerful stride and versatile midfield play as he rises through Real Madrid's academy ranks.

Real Madrid’s famed academy has uncovered another gem who’s drawing comparisons to first-team star Fede Valverde, with 17-year-old Diego Lacosta rapidly ascending through the ranks at Valdebebas.

The new ‘Pajarito’

Valverde earned his nickname ‘El Pajarito’ (Little Bird) at Peñarol due to his long, slender legs and running style that made him appear to float across the pitch. Now, those same characteristics are being spotted in young Lacosta, whose physical profile and playing style bear a striking resemblance to the Uruguayan international.

Like Valverde, Lacosta is a rangy midfielder with a powerful stride who can operate effectively across multiple positions in the engine room. The similarities don’t end there:

  • Physically imposing in duels
  • Covers tremendous ground with his running power
  • Technical quality in possession and organization
  • Powerful shot from distance
  • Ability to arrive late in the box
  • Exceptional vision, as demonstrated by a spectacular assist for Jacobo Ortega in Madrid C’s match against Orihuela

Meteoric rise through the ranks

This season has been Lacosta’s breakthrough after joining La Fábrica in 2020 from Santo Domingo Juventud. His progression has been nothing short of remarkable:

  • Started the season with Juvenil B
  • Earned promotion to become a regular starter for Real Madrid C
  • Made his debut for Castilla under Álvaro Arbeloa
  • Has featured across four different youth teams despite being only in his second year at juvenile level

The Club World Cup for youth teams in Córdoba last August/September proved to be a pivotal moment in Lacosta’s development. Under coach Marcos Jiménez, he was one of the standout performers as Madrid reached the semifinals.

Stepping up in big moments

Lacosta returned from that tournament with elevated status and began training with Juvenil A under Julián López de Lerma. His rise continued with appearances in the UEFA Youth League, coming off the bench against Olympiacos (where he won a penalty) and earning a start against Manchester City.

Perhaps his most memorable contribution at Juvenil B level was scoring the winning goal in the derby against Atlético Madrid – further evidence of his ability to deliver in crucial moments.

What’s particularly impressive about Lacosta is his mental and physical maturity, along with the competitive character that’s reminiscent of Valverde. These attributes have allowed him to seamlessly transition to Real Madrid C, where he’s played five matches since December, starting the last two and completing the full 90 minutes in the recent victory against Intercity.

The comparisons to Valverde aren’t just skin deep – it’s the combination of technical ability, physical prowess and mental fortitude that makes this particular ‘Little Bird’ one to watch as he continues his flight through the Madrid ranks.
