Málaga's transfer window focus narrows to just one position: left-back
With a six-match winning streak, Málaga are weighing up a late January move for a left-back, though squad registration issues make any deal complicated.
Riding high on six straight wins, Málaga CF might still dip their toes in the transfer market before the window slams shut - but only for a left-back.
Six wins shifts the focus
What a difference a winning streak makes. Málaga have been absolutely flying, with six consecutive victories shifting everyone’s attention from the boardroom to the pitch. The fans have gone from fretting about transfers to celebrating what’s happening on the grass - and you can’t blame ‘em.
Left-back hunt
Despite the good form, sporting director Loren Juarros and manager Juanfran Funes have discussed reinforcing the left side of defence. It’s not straightforward though:
- No departures means no arrivals possible
- Registration issues remain a stumbling block
- Current left-back Rafita has Funes’ complete trust
- Concern exists about lack of natural backup
- Injuries to Dani Sánchez and Víctor García (both out until March) leave them vulnerable
Funes backs current squad
Funes has been crystal clear about his stance, both privately and publicly. He’s backing his current crop of players, the same ones who’ve turned things around after he arrived to find the team “very damaged” - as he put it after their win against Burgos.
The gaffer’s loyalty to the players who’ve delivered during their purple patch is admirable. He’s made it known he wants Haitam to stay and doesn’t want Jokin or anyone else leaving.
Coherent approach
The manager’s reasoning makes perfect sense. Why fix what ain’t broken? Funes believes there’s no point bringing in new faces when the current squad is performing, especially players who’d need time to adapt.
Instead, he’s taking the Adam and Eve - believe - in his current squad and would rather welcome back his injured players who already understand the team’s philosophy than gamble on new signings.
