Maupay joins Sevilla on loan with purchase option
The Franco-Argentine striker arrives from Marseille to bolster Almeyda's attacking options, as Sevilla completes a busy January transfer window.
Sevilla have finally got their man as Neal Maupay arrives to beef up Matías Almeyda’s forward line until the end of the season.
Deal details
The Franco-Argentine forward joins on loan from Marseille with a purchase option of around €5 million. He’ll be competing for minutes with Isaac Romero and Akor Adams in what’s now a properly stacked attacking department at the Nervión club.
Getting this one over the line wasn’t as simple as sending a few faxes and shaking hands, mind. The club had to navigate some proper financial hoops first.
Salary cap manoeuvres
Sevilla needed LaLiga’s approval to register Maupay, which hinged on creating enough wiggle room in their wage bill. Two key moves made this possible:
-
Marcao’s injury registration: LaLiga greenlit the Brazilian defender’s removal from the squad list after he underwent surgery on a scaphoid fracture in his left foot. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for at least four months.
-
Alfon’s departure: The youngster has gone on loan to Villarreal for the remainder of the campaign, freeing up additional salary space.
These two moves combined gave Sevilla enough financial breathing room to stay within LaLiga’s salary limits and register their new striker.
What Maupay brings
Maupay arrived in Seville this morning for his medical examinations while the club sorted the final paperwork. He’s expected to adapt quickly to life in Spain, with his Argentine mother meaning the language barrier won’t be an issue.
The forward should slot nicely into Almeyda’s system, which demands high pressing, quick transitions, and relentless energy - all attributes that suit Maupay down to the ground. He’s known for his:
- Aggressive pressing from the front
- Sharp movement in the final third
- Natural goal instinct
- Creating space for teammates
- Strong character (sometimes too strong, if Premier League defenders are asked)
Sevilla fans will be hoping he can hit the ground running as they look to climb the table in the second half of the season. If he brings his shooting boots rather than leaving them in his old locker, they might’ve found a right Bobby Dazzler here.
