Maupay touches down in Seville as loan deal edges closer

French-Argentine striker Neal Maupay arrives in Seville to complete his loan move from Marseille, with the club working to clear salary space for registration.

Sevilla look set to secure their first winter signing as Neal Maupay flies in to complete his move from Marseille, pending LaLiga registration approval.

Loan deal with purchase option

The French-Argentine striker landed in the Andalusian capital this morning, with terms already agreed between the clubs for a loan with a non-obligatory purchase option. The move represents a significant boost for Matías Almeyda’s attacking options, though there’s still some admin to sort before we can call this one done and dusted.

Sevilla must first navigate LaLiga’s financial regulations before they can register their new man. The club is working on two fronts to create the necessary salary space:

  • Alfon’s loan move to Villarreal (which includes a non-obligatory €7 million purchase clause) is expected to be officially announced today
  • The club hopes Marcao’s injury will be classified as long-term, freeing up additional financial room

These moves should create sufficient wiggle room in the wage bill to complete Maupay’s registration without falling foul of the league’s economic controls.

Why Maupay fits Almeyda’s system

The 27-year-old forward brings exactly what Almeyda has been crying out for - a proper physical presence up top with a competitive edge. His style is tailor-made for Sevilla’s current approach:

  • High-pressing intensity
  • Quick transitions
  • Aggressive movement in the final third

Maupay is known for his mobility and predatory instincts in the box - traits that should complement existing forwards Isaac Romero and Akor nicely. The trio will give Almeyda various options to mix and match depending on opposition.

Transfer window priorities

Securing a striker was Sevilla’s absolute bread and butter in this transfer window, which slams shut next Monday (February 2nd) - coincidentally the same day Los Nervionenses visit Mallorca in LaLiga action.

While the sporting directors haven’t ruled out additional reinforcements before the deadline, sources suggest further signings would be tricky to pull off at this stage. For now, it seems all eyes are on getting Maupay registered and ready to contribute for the second half of the campaign.
