Villarreal closing in on MLS Young Player of the Year Alex Freeman
The Yellow Submarine accelerating their pursuit of Orlando City's promising right-back as Juan Foyth's injury forces transfer market rethink
Villarreal are making a late January dash to secure one of American football’s brightest young talents as they look to bolster their defensive options following recent setbacks.
MLS wonderkid on the radar
Orlando City’s Alex Freeman has emerged as the primary target for the Yellow Submarine, with the club now pushing to finalize a deal for the 21-year-old right-back who was recently crowned MLS Young Player of the Year.
The American international first caught Villarreal’s eye last summer when they reached an agreement with the player, only for Orlando to dig their heels in. But with Freeman’s contract running until December 2026 and the player keen on the move, both clubs appear to have found common ground.
According to American media reports, the transfer fee is expected to be around $4 million with a potential $3 million in add-ons – not exactly a king’s ransom for a player with his upside.
Foyth injury forces rethink
Villarreal’s transfer strategy has shifted dramatically following Juan Foyth’s injury, with the club previously taking a more cautious approach to the January window.
Freeman’s arrival would provide much-needed defensive flexibility, potentially allowing Mouriño or Pau Navarro to slot in at centre-back more regularly – addressing the gap left by Foyth’s absence.
The American’s profile fits perfectly with what Villarreal need – physically impressive with strong attacking instincts from the right flank. He’d be the second MLS import for Villarreal this season after Tani Oluwaseyi, showing the club’s growing interest in the American market.
Alfon deal also imminent
In a double transfer swoop, Villarreal are also set to complete the loan signing of Sevilla’s Alfon González imminently, with the player expected to arrive today.
The winger will provide competition for Alberto Moleiro on the left flank – addressing a position that manager Marcelino has been keen to strengthen since Manor Solomon’s departure.
Villarreal will secure an option to make the move permanent for €7 million, giving them flexibility for the summer window.
