Villarreal snap up Alfon on loan from Sevilla with €7m option

The Yellow Submarine have secured Alfonso González on loan from Sevilla with a purchase option, filling the gap left by Manor Solomon's departure.

Villarreal have moved swiftly to bolster their attacking options by securing Alfonso González, known as Alfon, on loan from Sevilla with an option to make the deal permanent for €7 million.

Filling the void

The Spanish winger’s arrival addresses the gap left by recent departures, particularly Manor Solomon and Illias Akhomach. Alfon will provide much-needed support for Alberto Moleiro on the left flank, where options had become rather thin on the ground following the Israeli international’s exit.

Marcelino, Villarreal’s gaffer, seems proper chuffed with the acquisition. Speaking from Leverkusen during a Champions League press conference, he highlighted the advantages of bringing in a Spanish player who can adapt immediately to the squad.

“I had a brief moment to greet him this morning,” Marcelino noted, expressing confidence that Alfon will strengthen the team for the crucial second half of the season.

Career trajectory

Alfon joined Sevilla last summer after an impressive campaign with Celta Vigo, where he had already caught Villarreal’s eye. However, his time in Seville has been hampered by injuries, limiting him to just 10 appearances for the Andalusian outfit.

For Sevilla, this loan arrangement offers financial relief and creates space to potentially bring in reinforcements as they approach the business end of the season.

More arrivals on the horizon

The Yellow Submarine aren’t stopping with Alfon. According to reports, American full-back Alex Freeman from Orlando City is next on their shopping list. The deal for the defender is reportedly in the final stages, with Villarreal set to pay:

  • €3.2 million fixed fee
  • Up to €2 million in difficult-to-achieve variables
  • Bonuses linked to individual performances and collective achievements including trophies

Marcelino’s men are clearly not mucking about in this transfer window as they look to strengthen their squad for what promises to be a proper tasty second half of the season.
