Granada snap up Izan González in midfield coup amid transfer battle
Granada CF have secured promising 21-year-old midfielder Izan González on loan from Cornellá, beating out interest from Girona, Barcelona and Espanyol.
Granada have moved swiftly to strengthen their engine room with the loan signing of highly-rated midfielder Izan González from Cornellá as the winter transfer window nears its conclusion.
Transfer tug-of-war
The 21-year-old Catalan midfielder had sparked something of a bidding war after an impressive first half of the season with Europa. Girona appeared to be in pole position to secure his signature, with Barcelona and Espanyol also showing interest, but Granada have nipped in to complete the deal directly with Cornellá, who hold the player’s rights.
What makes this deal particularly shrewd is that González was widely expected to join Girona before being loaned to a Segunda División side. Instead, Granada have cut out the middle man and secured the loan directly until the end of the season.
What González brings to Los Cármenes
Despite his tender age, González has caught the eye with his maturity on the pitch. He brings:
- Exceptional vision and ball distribution
- Fluid movement in possession
- Tireless defensive work rate
This move to Granada marks González’s first foray into professional football, and Pacheta will be hoping the youngster can translate his promising performances to the Segunda División as they push on through the second half of the campaign.
More defensive reinforcements on the way?
Granada aren’t stopping with González, either. The club appears close to finalizing the loan signing of Bambo Diaby, a versatile centre-back from Elche, who would arrive on similar terms until the season’s end. If completed, Diaby would provide much-needed depth to Pacheta’s defensive options.
The gaffer’s clearly not messing about as the transfer window heads for the final whistle. Granada fans will be hoping these new additions can help them climb the table in the coming months – it’s all gone a bit Pete Tong this season, but there’s still time to turn things around.
