Joaquín Fernández returns to Spain as Huesca bolster defensive options

The 29-year-old centre-back joins SD Huesca as their fourth winter signing, arriving on a free transfer after his spell with MLS side Kansas City.

Former Valladolid and Almería defender makes his way back to Spanish football after adventures in MLS and Turkey.

SD Huesca have continued their January recruitment drive, securing the signature of 29-year-old centre-back Joaquín Fernández as their fourth winter window acquisition. The Almería-born defender arrives on a free transfer following the conclusion of his contract with MLS outfit Kansas City.

Winter reinforcements

The Aragonese side have been proper busy this transfer window, with Fernández following earlier arrivals:

  • Efe Aghama
  • Jordi Escobar
  • Álex Cantero

Fernández’s signing addresses Huesca’s defensive concerns, which have been compounded by uncertainty surrounding Jorge Pulido’s future at the club. The defensive department might see further strengthening before the window slams shut, with Jair Amador potentially joining if he can negotiate his release from Eibar.

Getting up to speed

While Fernández brings valuable experience from his time in La Liga with Valladolid and Segunda División with Almería, there’s a slight catch - he hasn’t played competitive football since October. The defender will likely need some time to regain match fitness, with manager Antonio ‘Bolo’ Rodríguez yet to decide whether to include him in the squad for this weekend’s fixture.

Global journeyman

Fernández’s career has seen him become something of a globetrotter in recent years. Before his stint in America’s top flight, the Andalusian had a spell at Turkish side Trabzonspor. His most notable period in Spanish football came with Real Valladolid, where he competed in the Primera División.

Now, the defender returns to his homeland with a clear mission - helping Huesca secure their Segunda División status as they battle against relegation. For a team that’s had its fair share of defensive troubles this season, Fernández could be just what the doctor ordered, once he gets his bread and butter fitness levels back.
