Mbappé's Scathing Self-Criticism: 'Champions Don't Play Hot and Cold'

Kylian Mbappé didn't hold back after Real Madrid's Champions League defeat, criticizing the team's inconsistency and calling for improvement.

A brutally honest Kylian Mbappé has taken aim at Real Madrid’s inconsistent performances following their disappointing Champions League showing in Lisbon.

French star pulls no punches

The French forward, who bagged a brace in the defeat at the Estádio da Luz, was in no mood to sugar-coat Madrid’s performance. Despite his personal tally now reaching an impressive 36 goals this season, Mbappé was more concerned with the collective shortcomings.

“We’ve played absolutely rubbish,” was his blunt assessment, showing the kind of straight-talking that Madrid’s dressing room might need right now.

Consistency concerns

Mbappé’s main frustration appears to be the team’s Jekyll and Hyde performances:

  • “We don’t have continuity in our play, it’s a problem we need to solve”
  • “We can’t be good one day and poor the next, that’s not what champion teams do”
  • “It hurts because we wanted February to improve, but we deserve the position we’re in”

This lack of consistency has been Madrid’s Achilles heel this season. One week they’re playing like world-beaters, the next they’re all over the shop. For a club with such lofty ambitions, these fluctuations in form are becoming a proper headache.

Not just about attitude

When pressed on the root causes, Mbappé refused to pin the blame on any single factor:

“It’s not just an attitude problem or just a football problem, I think it’s a general issue. In the Champions League, every detail matters. If you don’t come with everything to win a match…”

His trailing off speaks volumes about the standards expected at the Bernabéu.

Rallying the troops

Despite the frank criticism, Mbappé ended on a more positive note, calling for unity and support from the Madrid faithful ahead of their next fixture:

“I’m asking the Bernabéu to come ready to support the team. We’re not eliminated yet, and in La Liga we’re in good form. If the Bernabéu is with us, we’ll put in a good performance on Sunday.”

It’s clear that while Mbappé isn’t pulling any punches about Madrid’s current form, he’s also focused on turning things around. The question is whether his teammates will respond to this wake-up call from their star striker.
