Rafa Marín: The Villarreal defender who caught Leverkusen's eye as their 'centre-back of the future'

How Bayer Leverkusen tracked Marín throughout his development before Napoli and Villarreal swooped, with the Spanish defender now set to face his admirers in the Champions League.

The Spanish defender who’s been turning heads across Europe faces a curious reunion in the Champions League tonight, as Villarreal’s Rafa Marín takes on Bayer Leverkusen – a club that had him marked as their potential defensive cornerstone before Villarreal secured his services.

The Leverkusen connection

Marín, still only 23, has been on Leverkusen’s radar multiple times during his development. The German champions, who’ve built a reputation for smart recruitment, kept tabs on the Real Madrid academy graduate through several stages of his career:

  • Initially during his standout period with Real Madrid Castilla
  • Later during his impressive loan spell at Deportivo Alavés
  • And again this past summer during Leverkusen’s defensive rebuild

But while Leverkusen monitored, Napoli acted decisively, splashing £12 million to secure his signature from Real Madrid before Villarreal eventually brought him to La Ceramica.

From Castilla to contender

The Guadajoz-born defender established himself as a proper talent at Real Madrid Castilla under Raúl González’s guidance. Whether playing on the left of a centre-back pairing alongside Mario Gila or as the central figure in a back three, Marín emerged as the defensive leader in a talented Castilla side that nearly achieved promotion to Spain’s second tier.

His development path bears similarities to another Madrid academy product who did make the Leverkusen move – Dani Carvajal. The right-back’s successful stint in Germany before returning to Madrid represents the template Leverkusen might have envisioned for Marín.

Finding his feet at Villarreal

After cutting his teeth in La Liga with Alavés – a club with a knack for developing young talent from bigger teams – Marín earned his Spain U21 call-up and caught the attention of Europe’s elite clubs.

His Champions League performances for Villarreal have been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing European campaign for the Yellow Submarine. With Juan Foyth’s injury leaving a significant hole in Marcelino’s defence, Marín is now stepping up to shoulder more responsibility.

His impressive showing against Real Madrid, where he handled Kylian Mbappé with remarkable composure, demonstrated why he’s considered one of Spain’s most promising defensive talents. As one scout told me, “He’s proper bread and butter as a defender but with the technical quality you expect from a Madrid academy graduate.”

Tonight at the BayArena, Leverkusen will get an up-close view of the centre-half who might have been wearing their colours – a player whose development trajectory continues to suggest he could become a defensive cornerstone at the highest level.
