Atleti's Double Swoop: Goretzka Deal Close as Simeone Eyes Striker Reinforcement

Mateu Alemany working on dual transfer strategy for Atletico Madrid with Leon Goretzka deal progressing and a search for attacking reinforcement underway.

Atletico Madrid’s transfer plans are heating up with the club working simultaneously on two major signings that could transform Simeone’s squad.

Goretzka Deal Nearing Completion

Leon Goretzka’s move to the Spanish capital appears to be on the verge of completion, with reliable sources suggesting the German international is “very close” to joining Atletico Madrid. The Rojiblancos have tabled an official offer between €2-3 million to Bayern Munich for the midfielder who’s contract expires in June.

The ball is now firmly in Bayern’s court, with the German giants expected to make a final decision imminently on whether to cash in now or lose him for free in the summer. Atletico have reportedly put together a significant salary package to tempt the 29-year-old to the Metropolitano.

Simeone Demands Character

What’s particularly telling about this potential signing is the specific profile Simeone has requested. The gaffer has apparently been in Alemany’s ear about bringing in players with:

  • Leadership qualities
  • Strong personality
  • Mental fortitude (or as they say in Spain, “huevos”)

There’s a feeling that some of last summer’s recruits haven’t quite brought that fighting spirit the Argentine demands. Bit of a mare, that.

Striker Search Intensifies

Atletico aren’t stopping at midfield reinforcements. The club is actively hunting for attacking firepower with a very specific profile in mind - someone who can play both as a central striker and out wide when needed.

One name that’s doing the rounds is Nottingham Forest’s Igor Jesus. The Brazilian fits the bill of what Simeone is after - a player who can beat his man and, crucially, bang in goals.

Market Manoeuvres

Elsewhere in La Liga, Espanyol are working to secure Torino forward Ngonge, while Bakambu has attracted interest from Real Betis, Alavés and Genoa.

For Atletico though, these next few days could be decisive. If they pull off both the Goretzka deal and secure an attacking reinforcement, they’ll have addressed two key areas that could make all the difference for their season run-in.
