Former Barça man Crosas' shocking anti-Spain rant could land him in hot water

Ex-Barcelona midfielder Marc Crosas, now a Mexican citizen, made controversial remarks about Spain that might complicate his passport renewal at the Spanish embassy.

Former Barcelona academy graduate turned Mexican citizen has put his foot right in it with some choice words about Spain that might come back to bite him when passport renewal time rolls around.

The controversial comments

Marc Crosas, who came through La Masia before playing for clubs like Celtic and Cruz Azul, made some proper dodgy comments during an interview with ‘La Sotana’ that have raised more than a few eyebrows.

The 38-year-old, who became a naturalized Mexican citizen in 2014, boasted about how his new passport allows him to express anti-Spain sentiments without the typical backlash:

“When I say ‘Viva Cataluña’ and that I’m an independence supporter, people tell me ‘Look at your ID card’ and I can say ‘I don’t have a Spanish ID, I have a Mexican passport’,” Crosas said while making a rude gesture.

The former midfielder then acknowledged the potential consequences of his words, adding: “I just hope they don’t see this at the Spanish embassy in Mexico, because I need to renew my passport.”

Football journey across continents

Crosas, born in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, has had quite the journeyman career after leaving Barcelona:

  • Olympique Lyon (France)
  • Celtic Glasgow (Scotland)
  • Volga Nizhny Novgorod (Russia)
  • Several Mexican clubs including Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul
  • CD Tenerife (Spain)
  • Tampico Madero (Mexico)

His time in Russia was particularly troubling, as he revealed: “I went six months without being paid in Russia. The owner would come to the dressing room with a garbage bag and start handing out cash. I lived off what I earned in four matches for the entire year.”

History of political statements

This isn’t the first time Crosas has waded into political waters. The former Spain youth international has been vocal about Catalan independence since at least 2016, though he previously claimed he “wouldn’t speak ill of Spain” despite supporting independence.

He’s also taken aim at Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez in the past, criticizing him in 2018 for “destroying the Spanish national team and the best Madrid in history” in just four months.

With his latest comments going viral, Crosas might need to have a butcher’s at his calendar and sort that passport situation before his next visit to the Spanish embassy turns into a right dog’s dinner.
