Goretzka U-turn puts Atleti's transfer plans in the bin
Bayern Munich midfielder was set for a cut-price move to Madrid, but with the deal now off, Simeone's side must scramble for alternatives before the window slams shut.
Atlético Madrid’s transfer window has gone from bad to worse as Leon Goretzka becomes the latest target to slip through their fingers, leaving the club in a proper two and eight with just days left in the January window.
Transfer market misery
Mateu Alemany wasn’t half right when he described this transfer window as “hostile” for Atlético. The sporting director has watched helplessly as one target after another has fallen by the wayside:
- Joao Gomes was initially identified as the midfield reinforcement
- Kang-in Lee represented the preferred wide option
- Goretzka emerged as a budget-friendly alternative that would free up funds for an attacking player
Now with Goretzka’s move apparently off, it’s back to the drawing board for Simeone and company.
Budget balancing act
The German midfielder’s potential arrival had been viewed as a shrewd piece of business - a “low-cost” option that would strengthen the squad while allowing for additional investment elsewhere. The beauty of the Goretzka deal was that it would have given Atleti the financial flexibility to pursue a more expensive attacking talent.
Without this bargain midfield solution, the club must now recalibrate its entire transfer strategy with the clock rapidly ticking down.
Four days and counting
With the transfer deadline looming just four days away, Atlético find themselves in a right pickle. The collapse of the Goretzka deal leaves them scrambling for alternatives in multiple positions.
The question now becomes whether they prioritize midfield reinforcement or attacking firepower - or somehow attempt to address both with increasingly limited options and time.
This latest setback continues a frustrating pattern for Los Colchoneros, who seem to be encountering roadblocks at every turn during what’s proving to be an exceedingly difficult January window.
