Madrid's European Meltdowns: Miró Slams Both Capital Clubs After Champions League Shockers
Gonzalo Miró didn't hold back in his assessment of Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid's embarrassing Champions League defeats, reserving special criticism for Simeone.
Both Madrid giants have been left with egg on their faces after humiliating Champions League defeats, with pundit Gonzalo Miró delivering a scathing assessment of their performances.
Capital Punishment
Speaking on ‘El Partidazo de COPE’, Miró pulled no punches when discussing Real Madrid’s 4-2 defeat to Benfica and Atlético’s shocking 2-1 loss to Bodø/Glimt. The TV presenter was quick to point out that “the embarrassment has been fairly equal” from both clubs.
Real Madrid’s capitulation was particularly galling given they had already secured qualification, with Miró noting that even the opposition goalkeeper managed to get on the scoresheet against them. Talk about a proper hammering!
Meanwhile, Atlético’s failure to overcome supposedly inferior opposition left Miró equally unimpressed. The Rojiblancos have now struggled against two teams they should have comfortably dispatched on paper.
Simeone in the Firing Line
While both Madrid sides copped criticism, it was Diego Simeone who received the brunt of Miró’s ire. The pundit absolutely rinsed the Argentinian tactician for his decision-making during the Bodø/Glimt debacle:
- Called Simeone’s tactical choices “absolute madness” from minute 60 onwards
- Suggested the manager “lost the plot” completely
- Blamed the coach directly for costing Atlético the result
- Noted the team was playing decent football until Simeone’s baffling changes
It’s not often you see such direct criticism of Cholo, who’s usually treated like the dog’s dinner by the Madrid media despite occasional tactical head-scratchers.
Capital Crisis?
These European disasters raise serious questions about both Madrid clubs’ Champions League credentials this season. While Real have qualification secured, their defensive fragility against Benfica will concern Carlo Ancelotti.
For Atlético, the situation looks more dire. Their struggle against supposedly weaker opposition suggests deeper problems that Simeone needs to address sharpish if they’re to make any impact in the knockout stages.
One thing’s for certain - it was a night to forget for football fans in the Spanish capital. Absolute stinkers from both sides!
