Málaga to drop Moussa Diarra to B team as transfer window shuffle looms
The Spanish club may be creating space for a left-back signing in the final days of the January window, despite manager Funes claiming no changes are needed.
Málaga CF are set to demote defender Moussa Diarra to their reserve team in what appears to be a calculated move to free up a first-team registration spot before the transfer window slams shut.
Reserve team solution
In a bit of a surprising twist, Málaga’s sporting director Loren Juarros confirmed during a press conference that Diarra will finish the season with the B team, despite currently holding a first-team registration. Rather than sending the Malian defender out on loan, the club has opted for an in-house solution.
Juarros explained that this arrangement allows Diarra to follow “a specific plan” while getting necessary minutes with Málaga’s B team. The club wants to keep him training with the first team while maintaining close medical supervision – particularly important as Diarra has recently returned from a serious knee injury.
Transfer window calculations
With just three days remaining in the January window, this move appears strategically timed. By shifting Diarra’s registration to the reserve side, Málaga creates space in a first-team squad that’s currently at full capacity.
According to MARCA’s sources, the club is considering strengthening only one position – left-back. The situation there is proper dicey with:
- Rafita being the only available left-back
- Dani Sánchez and Víctor García both injured with no clear return dates
Management disagreement?
Interestingly, there seems to be a bit of disconnect between the boardroom and the technical area. In a meeting between sporting director Juarros and manager Juanfran Funes, the possibility of signing a new left-back was discussed, but Funes maintained his public stance that “no ins or outs are necessary”.
Despite the gaffer’s position, the club brass clearly has concerns about their thin options at left-back as they look to secure their position in Spain’s Segunda División.
Diarra himself, who was loaned out last season, reportedly has no interest in leaving Málaga during this window – though he’s recently been training separately from the main group due to physical discomfort.
