Peio Canales: From San Mamés to El Sardinero - The unsung hero behind Racing's rise

How a pivotal chat with Ernesto Valverde led the former Athletic Club prospect to become a key figure in Racing Santander's promotion push.

A player who arrived without knowing his teammates’ names has become indispensable to the Segunda División leaders, scoring crucial goals and finding his smile again in Cantabria.

From Bilbao to Santander

When Peio Canales stepped onto El Sardinero’s pitch for the first time, he brought with him the same infectious smile that characterized his early days at Lezama a decade ago. The lad from Barrika (a town known for producing footballers and golfers) arrived at Racing, signed his contract, passed his medical, and immediately debuted - all without knowing many of his new teammates’ names, according to manager José Alberto.

But sometimes, when you know, you know. Canales felt at home straight away, facing Castellón with the confidence of a player who’d been there for years. Six months on, he’s still beaming and looking upward - both at the league table and his career trajectory.

The Valverde conversation that changed everything

It’s easy to forget that Canales once had Manchester United scouts watching his every move. His San Mamés debut against Sevilla and first Athletic goal in a friendly against Barakaldo seem distant memories now. But it was a frank conversation with Ernesto Valverde that proved the turning point in his career.

The Athletic manager presented him with two options: remain at the club with limited minutes (sometimes going a month without competitive football), or seek a new challenge where he could feel “important.” For Canales, the choice became clear.

“After that conversation, I started looking at options and Racing’s was the one I liked most,” he recalls. The fit between Santander and the Barrika native has been absolutely Bob’s your uncle.

Current form and future prospects

This has been a particularly sweet period for the attacking midfielder. His goal against Deportivo secured a crucial victory that strengthened Racing’s position at the top of the table. Despite their lofty position, Canales knows the job isn’t finished - the final grades come in June, as they say.

What began as a career-saving move in August 2025 could potentially extend into something more permanent. Racing and Canales fit together like bread and butter, and if promotion to La Liga materializes, who’s to say this relationship won’t continue?

For now, the former Athletic prospect is simply enjoying his football again - scoring goals, playing regularly, and leading Racing’s charge toward the promised land of Spain’s top flight.
