Rodrygo issues apology after Da Luz red card nightmare

Brazilian forward takes to social media to express regret over his dismissal in Real Madrid's Youth League defeat to Benfica, ruling him out of crucial play-in match.

Brazilian forward publicly apologises after receiving his first-ever red card for Los Blancos during their disappointing Youth League exit.

A Night to Forget in Lisbon

Talk about a proper shocker for the young Madridistas in Portugal. Real Madrid’s Youth League campaign hit the skids in spectacular fashion, with the team shipping four goals and crashing out of the competition before the quarter-final stage.

As if the defeat wasn’t enough of a kick in the teeth, both Rodrygo and Carreras managed to get themselves suspended for the upcoming play-in match, leaving manager Arbeloa with a right headache for team selection.

Rodrygo’s Public Apology

The Brazilian youngster has taken to social media to hold his hands up for his moment of madness. In his post, Rodrygo admitted he “got carried away in the moment” when complaining about time-wasting tactics.

This marks the first time he’s seen red while wearing the famous white shirt, and he clearly understands the gravity of his actions. The forward acknowledged the consequences of his dismissal and directed his apology to:

  • The fans
  • The club
  • His teammates
  • The manager

What Actually Happened?

The drama unfolded after referee Davide Massa had disallowed what would have been a crucial equaliser from Mbappé. The goal was chalked off because of an illegal interruption when Trubin was attempting to take a goal kick.

Despite the decision being fairly straightforward, Rodrygo wouldn’t let it go. His persistent protests earned him two yellow cards in the space of just one minute - absolute barmy behaviour from a player who should know better.

Suspension Looming

Barring any Adam and Eve’s (believe) miracle, both Rodrygo and Carreras are looking at one-match bans from UEFA. This rules Rodrygo out of contention for the upcoming play-in fixture, where Real Madrid will face either Bodo Glimt or Benfica.

The timing couldn’t be worse for the Brazilian, who’s been in a proper battle with Mastantuono for the right-wing position. Now Arbeloa will have to reshuffle his pack for what promises to be a proper test.
