Muriqi named La Liga Player of the Month after January goal spree

Mallorca's Kosovar striker Vedat Muriqi picks up La Liga's January Player of the Month award after netting five goals, including a hat-trick against Athletic Club.

Kosovo international Vedat Muriqi has been crowned La Liga’s Player of the Month for January 2026, following a blistering run of form that saw him bag five goals for Mallorca.

January goal machine

Muriqi has been absolutely mustard for the islanders, finding the net in defeats to Girona and Rayo Vallecano early in the month before putting on a proper show against Athletic Club at Son Moix. The big man bagged a hat-trick in that 3-2 victory, cementing his status as one of Europe’s most in-form strikers right now.

The Kosovar forward beat out some serious competition for the monthly award, including the likes of Vanat, Sorloth, Marcos Alonso and Guedes. Not bad company to be keeping, that.

Chasing club legend status

When Muriqi rocked up at Mallorca on deadline day of the January 2022 transfer window, few could have predicted the love affair that would develop between the striker, the club and the island. His goalscoring exploits have been nothing short of phenomenal:

  • 14 goals in La Liga this season already
  • 48 goals in 129 top-flight appearances for Mallorca
  • Now the club’s second-highest scorer in Primera División history
  • Surpassed Venezuelan Juan Arango’s tally of 45 goals
  • Just 6 goals away from matching Samuel Eto’o’s club record of 54

Transfer whispers

After his hat-trick heroics against Athletic Club, Muriqi dropped a bit of a bombshell in the mixed zone, revealing conversations with the club’s Football CEO Pablo Ortells. The striker made it clear where his heart lies, telling reporters: “If they want me to stay, I’ll stay.”

Word on the street is that several clubs have been sniffing around Son Moix, making enquiries about the in-form forward. But with Muriqi in this kind of nick, Mallorca would be absolutely barking to let him leave now. The Kosovar’s commitment to do “whatever the club asks” speaks volumes, but right now what they’re asking for is goals - and he’s delivering them by the bucket load.
