Sevilla's youth academy keeping the club afloat amid financial squeeze

With limited transfer funds, Sevilla are leaning heavily on homegrown talent this season, with academy graduates playing crucial roles under Matías Almeyda.

Sevilla’s youth academy has become the club’s saving grace during tough financial times, with homegrown talent stepping up when the transfer kitty’s looking more barren than me local after closing time.

Academy to the rescue

The Nervión outfit has historically benefited from their excellent cantera, but their reliance on academy products has reached new heights this season. José Ángel Carmona, Juanlu Sánchez, Kike Salas and Isaac Romero have all become increasingly important first-team fixtures.

Injuries and a thin squad have forced manager Matías Almeyda to dig even deeper into the reserves, with significant minutes going to youngsters like:

  • Andrés Castrín
  • Oso
  • Manu Bueno
  • Miguel Sierra

The upcoming match against Mallorca could see Sevilla field a backline featuring four players who’ve come through their B team (Juanlu, Carmona, Castrín and Kike Salas), alongside Gabriel Suazo. Up front, academy product Isaac Romero is expected to partner Akor Adams, with more youngsters waiting on the bench.

Almeyda’s faith in youth

After their recent victory against Athletic Club, when seven former Sevilla Atlético players featured, Almeyda was full of praise: “The most beautiful thing in football is playing with a sense of belonging.”

The Argentine gaffer clearly believes in the project, recognizing that while these lads are being thrown in during difficult circumstances, the connection they’ve established with supporters who identify with homegrown talent is priceless.

Minutes and commitment

The numbers tell the story. The established academy graduates (Carmona, Juanlu, Salas and Isaac) are among the eleven most-used players this season. Meanwhile, the newer faces from the B team have already accumulated 1,816 minutes between them – a figure that continues to grow.

Beyond those already featuring regularly, Almeyda has named several other youngsters in matchday squads, including Alberto Flores, Rafa Romero, Loren Luchino, Iker Muñoz, Edu Altozano and Álex Costa.

Long-term commitment

The club’s dedication to their youth setup is further demonstrated by recent contract renewals for prospects like Edu Altozano and Nico Guillén. They’ve also rejected offers from Segunda División clubs for Iker Muñoz, showing they’re proper serious about keeping their best young talent.

In these financially constrained times, Sevilla’s immediate future is clearly tied to the success of their academy. While other clubs might splash the cash, the Andalusians are showing there’s still value in growing your own – and that’s a bit of the old Bob Hope for their supporters.
