Neyou ships off to Saudi as Getafe loan out midfielder to Al-Okhdood

Cameroon midfielder Yvan Neyou has joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Okhdood on loan after struggling for minutes at Getafe this season.

Getafe’s Yvan Neyou has packed his bags for the Middle East, joining Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Okhdood on loan until the end of the season after finding himself well and truly frozen out at the Madrid club.

Failed Madrid stint

The Cameroonian midfielder’s time at the Coliseum has been nothing short of a proper nightmare. After joining Getafe on a free transfer from local rivals Leganés last summer, Neyou was expected to be a significant cog in the Azulones’ machine this season.

Instead, the 27-year-old has barely had a sniff of first-team action, with manager José Bordalás clearly not fancying him from the get-go. What was meant to be a fresh start after his Leganés exit has turned into a right old disaster.

Saudi lifeline

The loan move to Al-Okhdood offers Neyou a chance to get his career back on track with regular football. The Saudi club have been strengthening their squad this season as they look to establish themselves in the increasingly star-studded Saudi Pro League.

For Neyou, it’s a chance to put himself in the shop window after his Madrid struggles:

  • Loan runs until the end of the 2023/24 season
  • Both clubs will reassess his future in the summer
  • Al-Okhdood reportedly view him as an important signing

What next?

The temporary nature of the deal means Getafe haven’t completely closed the door on Neyou’s future at the club. However, this swift exit just months after arriving doesn’t bode particularly well for his long-term prospects in La Liga.

If he impresses in Saudi Arabia, there’s every chance the move could become permanent, following the well-trodden path of players finding new homes in the cash-rich Saudi Pro League after struggling in Europe’s top competitions.
