Almeyda targets crucial consistency for survival-chasing Sevilla
Sevilla boss Matías Almeyda emphasizes the importance of stringing together results ahead of tough away clash at Mallorca as relegation battle intensifies.
Sevilla manager Matías Almeyda has stressed the importance of consistency as his side prepares for Sunday’s crucial away fixture against Mallorca, with the Argentine hoping to secure points in three consecutive matches.
After finding some breathing space following their victory against Athletic Club, Almeyda’s men travel to Son Moix looking to build momentum in their fight to climb away from the relegation scrap.
Finding consistency
The gaffer’s been crystal clear about what Sevilla need right now – points on the board, and plenty of ‘em.
“For us, it would be very good to get points in three consecutive matches,” Almeyda told the press, highlighting the razor-thin margins in La Liga’s bottom half this season.
The boss hasn’t forgotten their last collapse either, referencing how quickly things went pear-shaped after a promising position: “The match we lost should teach us a lot. We went from winning to losing heavily. It was bitter and took us several games to get back on our feet.”
Mallorca challenge
Sevilla face a proper test at Son Moix against a Mallorca side that’s been formidable on home turf this season. Almeyda’s not taking anything for granted:
- Mallorca have dropped very few points at home
- They overturned Sevilla in just ten minutes in their previous encounter
- The equality in the bottom half makes every point “worth a ton”
Transfer update
Almeyda confirmed new signing Neal Maupay is settling in well, having spoken with both the player and his former club. “He’s very welcome,” the manager added.
There’s positive news on the injury front too, with Azpilicueta and Nianzou both back training with the group, though their involvement against Mallorca remains to be decided.
Focus on themselves
In true Almeyda fashion, he’s having none of that looking over your shoulder business. The gaffer insists his team must focus solely on their own performances:
“Stopping to look at what others do would be a serious error. As long as it depends on us, we shouldn’t look at others. Everything you wish badly will come back to you.”
He added a bit of passion about his commitment to the club: “When they gave me the opportunity to come, I was motivated by this badge and the history of this club. If it were up to me, I’d always stay.”
Januzaj promise
Almeyda revealed a touching moment with Adnan Januzaj, who’s working his way back from injury. The Belgian hasn’t had much luck since joining in 2022 but earned praise for taking a wage cut to stay at the club.
The manager disclosed he promised Januzaj: “The day you score in the league, I’ll run onto the pitch to hug you.” Proper heart-warming stuff from the Argentinian, who clearly values loyalty and character in his squad.
