Betis close to landing Fidalgo: The Madrid academy product set for La Liga return after Mexican adventure
Real Betis on the verge of signing Álvaro Fidalgo from Club América in a shrewd winter market move, bringing the former Real Madrid youth talent back to Spain.
Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis are set to secure their first winter signing with Álvaro Fidalgo, the Spanish midfielder who’s been plying his trade in Mexico for the past five years, expected to join on a four-and-a-half-year deal before tomorrow’s transfer deadline.
Clever financial maneuvering
Despite nearly maxing out their salary cap last summer, Betis have found a way to make this deal work without needing to offload any players first. The transfer fee is reportedly around the two million euro mark - not exactly breaking the bank - while the lengthy contract through June 2030 helps spread the amortization costs. Smart business, that.
The club is still working on potentially moving Bakambu on, which would free up space for another attacking reinforcement before the window slams shut.
Filling the creativity void
With this signing, Betis are killing two birds with one stone:
- Adding creative talent in midfield with a player who can operate either as a double pivot or further forward in the number 10 role
- Giving Pellegrini much-needed options after losing both Isco and Lo Celso to long-term injuries
- Getting ahead on a move they’d originally planned for the summer window
It’s similar to their approach with Johnny Cardoso - identifying talent early and moving decisively.
From Madrid to Mexico and back
The 26-year-old Asturian represents a proper bargain as his América contract expires this summer. Betis have moved swiftly to beat competition from Real Sociedad and Lazio, with the deal expected to be completed before tomorrow night’s deadline.
Fidalgo’s journey is an interesting one. Born in Hevia in 1997, he came through the youth systems at Oviedo and Sporting before joining Real Madrid’s academy. After a loan spell at Rayo Majadahonda, he returned to Real’s Castilla side and even made his first-team debut under Santiago Solari in a Copa del Rey tie against Melilla in December 2018.
He later featured in pre-season under Zidane before brief stints at Castellón and then following Solari to Club América in January 2021. Five years in Mexico have clearly done him the world of good, and now he’s ready for his Spanish top-flight chance.
Betis are playing it cautious until the deal is officially over the line, but all signs point to Fidalgo being Benito Villamarín-bound. Proper tidy bit of business, if you ask me.
