Betis make late dash for Mexico's midfield maestro Álvaro Fidalgo

Manuel Pellegrini's side looking to bolster creativity rather than attack as they accelerate efforts to sign América's Spanish midfielder before transfer deadline

While everyone’s been banging on about Betis needing a striker, Pellegrini’s quietly identified midfield creativity as his real January priority. The Seville club are now making a serious move for América de México star Álvaro Fidalgo.

Mexican success story

Fidalgo, a 28-year-old Spanish midfielder, has become one of the standout talents in Liga MX since joining América in February 2021. The Asturian playmaker, who came through Real Madrid’s youth system, has impressive numbers in Mexico:

  • 227 official matches for América
  • 22 goals
  • 30 assists
  • Contract expiring this summer (June 30)

Standing at 1.74m, Fidalgo operates primarily as a central creative midfielder, comfortable both as a deep-lying playmaker or in a more advanced number 10 role. His ability to dictate play has made him one of the most highly-regarded players in Mexican football.

Racing against time

Betis are proper keen to get this deal over the line before Monday’s transfer deadline, especially with Real Sociedad also showing interest in the player. The timing looks promising - Fidalgo was mysteriously dropped from América’s squad for their match against Necaxa overnight, suggesting something might be brewing.

According to Transfermarkt, Fidalgo’s market value sits around €8.5 million, but with his contract situation, Betis might be able to secure him for a more reasonable fee. The club has previous success with América players, having signed both Guido Rodríguez and Diego Laínez from the Mexican giants in recent years.

Shifting priorities

Pellegrini hinted at this change in transfer strategy during his pre-Valencia press conference, suggesting that while the public perception was that Betis desperately needed a striker, internally they’ve identified creativity as their main weakness.

That said, the club hasn’t completely abandoned their search for a forward. They’re still in the market for a striker before Monday’s deadline, with the profile depending on whether Cédric Bakambu stays or goes.

For now though, it’s all eyes on Fidalgo as Betis look to add some Spanish flair from across the pond to their midfield. Bit of a Bobby Dazzler this one could be.
