Getafe's touching tribute to Davinchi's father David Cordón after tragic train accident

Emotional scenes at the Coliseum as Getafe honour David Cordón Cano, father of youth player Davinchi, who lost his life in the Adamuz train disaster.

Getafe showed their true colours as a family club with a heartfelt tribute to David Cordón Cano, father of youth player Davinchi, before their match against Celta Vigo.

Pre-match ceremony

In a moving gesture before kick-off, Getafe president Ángel Torres presented flowers to the family of David Cordón, who tragically lost his life in the Adamuz train accident in Córdoba. His wife and two sons, Lucas and Davinchi (a Getafe player), were present to receive the club’s condolences.

The Coliseum then fell silent for a minute’s reflection, honouring both Cordón and all victims of the railway disaster. The Getafe faithful displayed a banner reading: “We are a family above all else. David Cordón, RIP.”

A Spanish beach football legend

David Cordón was no ordinary football dad. The 50-year-old was a proper legend of Spanish beach football:

  • Two-time European champion (2001 and 2004)
  • MVP of the 2004 European Championship
  • Respected figure in the beach football community

The tragedy has hit the Getafe community particularly hard as Cordón was returning from watching Getafe’s match against Valencia at the Coliseum when the accident occurred.

Club’s heartfelt response

Getafe’s response to the news was absolutely spot on, showing why they’re more than just a football club. In their statement, they spoke of how Cordón had “conquered” them with his “simplicity, kindness and generosity” in the short seven months they’d known him.

It’s proper sad this, ain’t it? The beautiful game brings us together in celebration, but also in grief. The dignity shown by Getafe in these difficult circumstances reminds us that football clubs are, at their best, extended families that stand together through thick and thin.

For the Cordón family and especially young Davinchi, the road ahead will be challenging, but it’s clear they’ll have the full support of their Getafe family every step of the way. Sometimes football has to take a back seat when life throws its worst curveballs.
