Rioja's muted celebration against Betis shows class amid painful Valencia defeat

Former Betis man Luis Rioja scored against his old club but kept celebrations respectful, as Valencia suffered late heartbreak at La Cartuja.

Valencia winger Luis Rioja showed his class with a muted celebration after scoring against his beloved Betis, but couldn’t prevent his side from suffering a gutting late defeat.

Respect amid rivalry

Rioja, who opened the scoring in the first half at La Cartuja, made no secret about where his heart lies despite now earning his bread and butter with Valencia. The Seville-born wide man was even applauded by sections of the Betis faithful who appreciated his restraint after finding the net.

“Everyone knows my feelings and it’s obvious, but I’m committed to a badge,” Rioja explained after the match, acknowledging the delicate balance between personal sentiment and professional duty.

Late heartbreak

Despite Rioja’s contribution, Valencia couldn’t hold on as Betis snatched victory with just three minutes of normal time remaining. The manner of defeat left Rioja and his teammates absolutely gutted:

“It’s a very painful defeat, especially because of how it happened. We’d worked the match very well and competed at a high level in a complicated stadium against a great opponent.”

Valencia had been on a positive run with back-to-back league wins before this setback, and Rioja believes the team showed enough quality to have deserved something from the game.

Looking ahead

There’s no time for Valencia to feel sorry for themselves with a massive week ahead:

  • Copa del Rey quarter-final against Athletic Club
  • La Liga clash with Real Madrid at Mestalla

Rioja remains optimistic despite the result: “Beyond the defeat, the team needs to focus on the positives. We have a beautiful and important match in front of our fans, and I believe we’ve taken a step forward in recent games that we want to maintain.”

As for his Betis connection? Rioja summed it up perfectly: “I hope Betis wins all their matches, except when they face Valencia.”
