Wesley's debut dampened as 10-man Real Sociedad held by Athletic
Brazilian winter signing Wesley Gassova Ribeiro made his first appearance for La Real just 55 hours after arriving, but couldn't prevent Bilbao stealing a point in the Basque derby.
Just 55 hours after touching down in San Sebastián, Wesley Gassova Ribeiro was thrown straight into the deep end of Basque football’s most heated rivalry. Talk about a baptism of fire for the Brazilian winter signing.
Far from ideal circumstances
The new arrival would’ve dreamt of a more memorable debut, but instead found himself caught in a proper struggle after La Real were reduced to ten men shortly after his introduction. What started as an attacking cameo quickly transformed into a defensive shift as the txuriurdin battled to protect their advantage.
Unfortunately for Wesley and his new teammates, Athletic Bilbao eventually found their equaliser, forcing Real Sociedad to settle for a solitary point rather than the full three they’d been hoping for.
Limited impact
With the numerical disadvantage forcing Imanol Alguacil’s side onto the back foot, Wesley barely had opportunity to showcase his attacking abilities that prompted La Real to bring him to Anoeta in the January window:
- The Brazilian struggled to make any meaningful impact in the final third
- Defensive responsibilities took priority following the red card
- Any pre-planned attacking integration had to be abandoned
Baptism by derby
Thrown straight into a Basque derby with barely time to learn his teammates’ names, Wesley will at least have experienced the intensity of Spanish football from day one. Not many players can say their debut came in one of the country’s most passionate regional rivalries.
While the circumstances weren’t ideal, the Brazilian will now have a better understanding of what’s required as he settles into life at La Real. The club’s supporters will hope to see much more of his attacking qualities in the coming weeks, preferably with eleven men on the pitch.
