Alberto's protégé turned problem: The mentor who shaped Fermín López now plots his downfall
Albacete boss Alberto González faces his former Linares starlet Fermín López in Copa del Rey clash, having helped mould the Barcelona midfielder into the player he is today.
Alberto González will face a familiar foe when his Albacete side host Barcelona in the Copa del Rey – a player he helped transform from raw talent into the midfield dynamo now lighting up the Camp Nou.
The Albacete gaffer and Barcelona’s Fermín López share a special bond that began at Real Betis and strengthened during their time together at Linares in Primera RFEF. Now, in one of those proper cup football twists of fate, master meets apprentice on opposing sides at the Carlos Belmonte.
The talent spotter
González spotted Fermín’s potential early doors: “I saw his competitiveness from when he was just a youngster at Betis,” he recalls. When the chance came to bring him to Linares for the 2022-23 season, González didn’t hesitate despite Barcelona’s initial reluctance.
The move proved transformative for both. While González got to enjoy coaching a special talent, Fermín gained valuable experience in a competitive environment that accelerated his development.
”An animal of competition”
What makes Fermín special? According to his former gaffer, it’s a rare combination of natural attributes and mindset:
- Extraordinary competitive spirit
- Natural desire to improve with every session
- Outstanding physical and technical qualities
- Tactical intelligence beyond his years
“He has a great virtue which is what I call being an ‘animal of competition’,” González explains. “His commitment to every action, his desire to improve, to win… it all comes naturally to him.”
From humble beginnings to Barcelona star
Fermín himself has acknowledged how crucial his Linares spell was, once saying that joining the humble club “made me realize the reality” of football and helped him mature as both player and person.
The speed of his rise has surprised even González, who always believed in his potential but couldn’t have predicted such a rapid ascent to becoming a key player for Barcelona.
Cup memories and tactical challenges
Interestingly, this isn’t González’s first Copa del Rey encounter with Barcelona. In 2021-22, his Linares side narrowly lost 2-1 to the Catalan giants in a spirited performance that showcased his team’s competitive mentality regardless of the opposition.
Now at Albacete, González faces the challenge of stopping the very player he helped develop. His strategy? “We’ll need to work as a team, with great concentration and determination. Just like he does.”
Before kick-off, expect a warm embrace between the two – a moment of mutual respect before the battle begins. After that, it’s game on, with González hoping his inside knowledge might just give Albacete the edge in this fascinating cup tie.
