Barça youngster Andrés Cuenca heads to Sporting Gijón in unique three-way deal
Barcelona's promising 18-year-old centre-back Andrés Cuenca joins Sporting Gijón on loan, with his future already mapped out for a move to Como in Italy.
Barcelona’s talented young defender Andrés Cuenca becomes Sporting Gijón’s final winter signing, completing a curious three-way arrangement that sees the 18-year-old gain his first taste of professional football in Spain’s Segunda División.
Three-club arrangement
The deal for the Córdoba-born centre-back is rather unusual, with Sporting acting as something of an intermediary in the player’s development path. Barça have identified Cuenca as having significant potential but felt he needed more substantial experience than he was getting in Segunda RFEF (Spain’s fourth tier).
The teenager’s career trajectory is already mapped out in fascinating fashion:
- Currently playing with Barcelona’s youth teams
- Now joining Sporting Gijón for the remainder of this season
- Already has a future move to Italian side Como planned, where he’ll work under former Barça midfielder Cesc Fàbregas
Despite his tender age, Cuenca has already made the journey to Asturias, passed his medical, and begun training with Borja Jiménez’s squad. He’ll wear the number 44 shirt and while technically registered with Sporting’s B team, he’s expected to be fully integrated with the first-team setup.
Sporting complete their winter business
Barring any last-minute surprises, Sporting have now concluded their January transfer activity with three new arrivals:
- Brian Oliván (free transfer before the window opened)
- Andrés Ferrari (attacking reinforcement)
- Andrés Cuenca (defensive addition from Barcelona)
In terms of departures, three players have left the club during this period:
- Yann Kembo (loaned to Ibiza)
- Caicedo and Cortés (both had loans terminated and moved to Huracán in Argentina)
Promotion push
The Asturian outfit are looking to maintain their position near the top of the Segunda División table as they chase promotion to La Liga. The gaffer will be hoping these winter additions can provide the boost needed to keep them in contention right through to the business end of the season.
Cuenca’s arrival particularly strengthens their defensive options, which could be proper crucial as they prepare for Sunday’s away trip to face Eibar at Ipurua.
